Understanding The Diabetic Food Pyramid

by Andrew Bicknell

The diabetic food pyramid is much like the more recognizable regular food pyramid with the primary difference being it helps diabetics avoid eating excess sugar. Because it is directed for use by those with diabetes it is fully supported by the American Dietetic Association and the American Diabetes Association.

Sugar is the enemy for all diabetics. This does not mean that they cannot eat it because most diabetics can eat sugar from time to time. Their ability to enjoy some sugar is dependent on the severity of their diabetic condition. Once diagnosed with diabetes a person can no longer enjoy high sugar food the way they used to and the diabetic food pyramid helps them sort out what foods to eat and which to avoid.

The nice thing about the diabetic food pyramid is how easy it makes choosing the right kind of foods. By simply looking at it any diabetic can gain an understanding about the types of foods they are required to eat to maintain their health. It also outlines serving sizes and incorporating diabetic friendly foods into complete meal plans.

There are six categories of food groups in the diabetic food pyramid. At the bottom of the pyramid is the main food group, or that which people with diabetes should eat the most of, which consists of whole grains, starchy vegetables and beans. The second group up on the pyramid consists of fruits and vegetables. On the third rung are dairy products, meats and other protein sources. At the tip of the pyramid are the foods that all diabetics need to watch out for and they include fats, oils, and of course refined sugars and sweets.

The United States Department of Agriculture last updated the diabetic food pyramid in 2005, making it 3 years old. It is a very good starting point for any one with diabetes giving a good description of food that they can eat and the recommended amount of calories a diabetic should consume each day.

There is a wealth of information about the diabetic food pyramid available on the internet. The best place to start is those organizations that work specifically with this disease as they will have the most up-to-date and complete information. With a little research just about anyone can become an expert on the subject of diet and diabetes.
