The Theater of the Absurd - What Does This Title Identify? Is it an Important Cultural Issue?

by Earl Cripe

The Theater of the Absurd is theater in which standard plots, characterizations and themes are ignored in order to convey the irrational. This is a philosophy, not a gimmick. Those who indulge in this kind of theater are attempting to destroy the concept of an ordered society and universe, and paint a picture of the insane and fantastic nature of reality and humanity that is completely isolated in a surrealistic and meaningless world.

A classic example of this philosophy is found in William Faulkner's The Sound and the Fury. In Faulkner's work there are three brothers. The complete idiot is the hero and the normal one by that paradigm shift. The half wit, whose mental confusion is represented by streams of consciousness, is somewhat normal. The sane, sound, successful businessman is Faulkner's idiot. The Theater of her absurd may also be demonstrated by mixing the real with the unreal until the lines are blurred.

The success of this kind of tactic is dramatized when theater audiences cried because E.T. cried. The Theater of the Absurd operates in modern electronic music where disharmonics and deliberately grating and offensive sounds are making a social comment against conformity, in situation comedies where sexual abnormalities are presented as normal, and in science fiction serials on television, where humans, aliens, and machines intercourse in moral and physical ways.

The Theater of the Absurd finds expression in the movies, in novels, and on the stage where the age long conventional Judaic-Christian value system that has preserved the normal state of existence for many centuries is openly challenged by the absurd, the bizarre, and the grotesque. In the final analysis the Theater of the absurd is an all out war by the counter-culture against God, the Bible, and Truth.
